BOOKS

The Preschool Source is proud to be the only authorized Western States distributor for Across the Globe Learning Resources. Dr. Roseann Rinear and Conni Huntley have spent over thirty–five years in preschool, elementary and high school education. We are known for our expertise in setting up children's libraries and ordering great children's literature. During our three years working on an Early Reading First program, we bought thousands of books in English and Spanish. Our biggest problem was finding quality dual language books and materials in other languages. Then we found Across the Globe with dual and multi language resources in 47 different languages! We believe dual-language books and learning materials are needed to promote bilingualism in students and families.

What is so special about these books?

  • 47 world languages are offered in dual language format—English and another selected language. These languages originate from Africa, Asia, India, Europe, Russia & the Middle East .
  • All books are translated by native language speakers.
  • On the back of every book is the list of all the languages in which it is available.
  • The target ages for the materials are approximately Pre-K through 3 rd grade.
  • The quality of the books is amazing. The books come in an assortment of styles including board books, flap books, pop-up, paperback and hardcover.
  • The ability to buy the same book in an array of languages makes curriculum development much easier. Languages other than Spanish or French are now included in many classrooms.
  • It's not unusual for immigrant children feel left out because they do not have access to the same reading materials that English or Spanish speaking children have. With our line of books, all children have the opportunity to read the same book in their native language.
  • These beautifully illustrated stories include fables, folk tales, myths and legends and contemporary stories representing cultures around the world including Africa, Asia, India , Europe & the Middle East .
  • You'll even find the ever popular The Very Hungry Caterpillar in 9 languages, Brown Bear, Brown Bear in 17 languages & We're Going on a Bear Hunt in 16 languages.
  • There are over 70 titles available…when multiplied by the number of languages available for each title…the total number of individual books available is over 1200.
  • Award winning books include: Little Red Hen and The Grains of Wheat (WOW Literacy Award), Farmer Duck (Smarties Book Prize, British Book Awards Children's Illustrated Book of the Year), Journey Through Islamic Arts (National Literacy WOW award)
  • New books hot off the presses include:
    - The Elves and the Shoemaker (retold and illustrated by the award winning team that made Little Red Hen and The Grains of Wheat ) available in 34 languages
    - Lion Fables available in 29 languages
  • Having these books in school libraries helps the School District with Department of Justice/Office of Civil Rights compliancy. With our books, reading material will now be available in languages that represent the demographics of their student population.
  • The books are terrific for family literacy programs and classroom libraries
  • In cases where the ESL/Bilingual department is tight on funds, libraries often have available money to acquire the books.
  • Some libraries do not commingle our titles in the stacks…they proudly display them in a special area so they are easy for ESL children to find.
  • The books are dual language so it is like getting 2 books in 1 and of a superior quality as far as paper and illustrations are concerned. Many ESL teachers have stated that often when they went back to their home country and purchased books to bring back to the US , the overall quality was poor, the books were not dual language and in some cases the translations were hand written.

What does research show about books?

  • Books in a single language can only be used by readers of that language; dual language books are accessible to a much wider range of peoples
  • Teachers can use these books to raise language and cultural awareness for all children
  • Dual language books are popular with parents of bilingual children, serving as a conduit between home and school. ESL parents can develop their own reading skills and widen their English vocabulary using dual language books with their children.
  • A solid partnership with parents can play a critical role in developing children's academic literacy skills in two languages, creating a space for them to explore their personal identities and encouraging their parents to become more involved in the education of their children.
  • Evidence from a recent case study suggests that parental participation in school literacy is increased when teachers make students' linguistic background part of the curriculum. In addition, students appear to develop a heightened awareness and acceptance of linguistic diversity as part of school life when a multilingual focus underlies literacy teaching. The potential for increasing student and parent investment in school literacy by creating a school environment in which students' linguistic and cultural background is valued as part of the curriculum is supported by the data collected. The case study elaborates on this claim and provides evidence that students' engagement with school literacy is strengthened when their linguistic differences are perceived as strengths and utilized to scaffold new learning rather than being looked at as deficits in need of remediation.

POSTERS & MAPS

  • 19 posters, maps and laminated cards are offered—some in English & others are multilingual
  • 48 durable brightly colored banner size friezes are laminated, ensuring a long life. The friezes are also dual language or multilingual with an array of languages represented on each one. Posters illustrate holidays, science themes, cultures, animals and other miscellaneous topics.

SOFTWARE

  • The Talking Dictionary is incredibly popular. With 40 versions, almost every language is represented. There is grant funding available to School Districts for dictionaries and software.
  • Early Years CD ROMs have 10 languages on each disc. Titles include: My House and My Clothes . My Car is also available; however, the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car. (The Brits might argue that we put the steering wheel on the wrong side!)
  • Speak & Spell Storytellers come in English and 5 additional languages. Each of the 4 stories is narrated in the 5 languages (Arabic, Bengali, Polish, Somali, & Urdu) along with unabridged & simplified English. Students and teachers can also record themselves telling the story so that overall the student has the choice of a total of 8 languages available.
  • Interactive Literacy CD-ROMs provide a large array of activities including rhyming, synonyms, punctuation, create your own picture book & look, listen and read (to name a few.) These are currently available in English only.
